In February 2018, a small team of volunteers from the Foundation consisting of 2 veterinarians, one animal health technician and one veterinary assistant, continued the vaccination and sterilization campaign begun in October 2017 in Baraa, a suburb of the city of Arusha in Tanzania. In order to maintain the goal of vaccinating  70% of the dog population to help eradicate rabies, it was extremely important to continue our campaign in this part of the city.

A small valley separates this sector in two, making it difficult to get to the municipal office where the clinic was held last October. In order to fix this problem we set up the clinic in the offices of two Tanzanian veterinarians, Dr. Honest and Dr. Georges. Thank you for opening your doors for us. A great collaboration and a little bit of shade were very much appreciated!

We returned to the municipal office at the end of the week. Surprise! A ton of people were waiting for us at the opening of the office. What was happening? In 2018, the Tanzanian government decided that all of the population had to obtain a national identification number. The registration in Baraa turned out to be the same weekend as our clinic. What a coincidence! Our presence didn’t pass unnoticed and a lot of interest in the clinic was shown.

In 5 days, 130 doses of rabies vaccine was administered. We also sterilized 94 dogs and one small cat. Thank you to all of the FVAI volunteers and to our local partner Mbwa Wa Africa.
