In September 2019, FVAI returned to Tanzania for the sixth time in two years. The team of volunteers comprised of 3 veterinarians and 4 animal health technicians, sterilized 208 dogs and 1 cat during this project.
During our stay, 2 young Tanzanian veterinarians joined our group. We are proud to have shared our surgical knowledge with them so that they may eventually perform sterilizations throughout the year, to humanely control the animal population and consequently reduce the number of cases of rabies, which are still to numerous in this African country.
We celebrated our last clinic day by participating for the first time in World Rabies Day on September 28, 2019. Before our arrival in Tanzania, Mbwa Wa Africa, our local partner, had already vaccinated over 2000 animals and educated 36000 students on bite prevention and rabies transmission. What an achievement!
We would like to thank everyone who participated in our fundraiser: Eliminate Rabies. Your donations of $5 = 100 needles = 100 dogs vaccinated allowed us to bring 10000 needles to Tanzania. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
We will be returning to Tanzania from February 19 – March 6, 2020 as well as in September 2020, to again participate in World Rabies Day. Keep watching our website for more information as it becomes available.
