Tanzania October 2022
In October 2022, FAVI will be back in Tanzania in the north of the country and on the mythical island of Zanzibar. This project will be very diversified and as inspiring as ever. There will certainly be something for everyone!
For a tenth time since 2017, we will start our project on land in the Arusha region with our local partner Mbwa Wa Africa. “Mbwa” means dog in Swahili. If you are more of a “dog person” this portion of the project is for you! The clinic is mobile and we treat mostly dogs. We want to continue the spay/neuter and rabies vaccination efforts in small communities around Usa River.
Surgeries are held outdoors in the shade of trees or in a schoolyard. There is never electricity and the water is not drinkable but nothing stops us. Real bush medicine as we like it!
After three days of clinic, we will leave for a four-day safari. You will then have the option of returning home or continuing the adventure with us for a second weekend of clinic, or extending your stay in Zanzibar. Did we say diverse as a project?
Indeed, our second part of the project will take place on the island of Zanzibar with the Paka clinic team. “Paka” means cat in Swahili. Cat lovers, here is a unique chance to meet these wonderful creatures straight out of the tale of a thousand and one nights!
Two non-profit organizations, Paka clinic and Mama paka Zanzibar, operate year round in Stone Town. Paka Clinic treats street cats and its TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) program helps to control the island’s cat population and improve their living conditions. Mama paka Zanzibar, with its extraordinary expertise, takes care of orphaned and/or sick newborn kittens and finds adopters. Their values being totally in line with ours, we have offered to help them in their mission by putting on our surgical gloves and providing all the anesthetic drugs and surgical material free of charge in order to realize a massive sterilization campaign.
Our pilot project in Zanzibar last February was a great success! In 5 days, we sterilized 141 cats and 9 dogs. We would like to repeat the experience with all our heart. This time, we will take more advantage of our stay on the island to immerse ourselves in the Zanzibarian culture, snorkel in the Indian Ocean, sail on a “dhow”, visit the spice farms or simply relax.
We have created different packages. It’s up to you to choose what inspires you the most. Whether you choose a safari or the island of Zanzibar, the ultimate goal of our missions abroad is to help animals and their people. Traveling with FAVI is traveling differently! By participating in this project, you will get off the beaten path and have the chance to appreciate the daily life of the Tanzanian people. Great adventures await you!
Located on the east coast of Africa, south of Kenya, Tanzania is famous for its endless plains of the Serengeti and its great wildebeest migration, its exceptional wildlife in the Ngorongoro Crater and its elephants in Tarangire Park. There are more than 120 ethnic groups in Tanzania which makes the country politically stable. The Maasai culture is still very much present, especially around the crater where they live in their village (boma) with their cattle. There are many flights to Kilimanjaro airport (JRO). You can obtain a visa upon arrival in Tanzania or online before your departure.
Zanzibar is a Tanzanian archipelago located off the coast of East Africa. The main city is called Stone Town. It has a mixture of African and Islamic influences with its many minarets, winding streets and beautiful carved doors characteristic of this mythical place.
**We have reduced the cost of participation in this project by selling our surgical hats. A huge thank you to all!
