The Foundation for Veterinary Aid International (FVAI) will be returning to Belize on January 5-12, 2019. We will again be visiting the village of Sarteneja. This will be our eighth visit to this small and dynamic community.
The majority of the villagers do not own a car and the closest veterinarian is two hours away by bus or an hour away by boat across the Bay of Corozal. By operating a clinic in the heart of the village, FVAI is the solution to the lack of access to veterinary care. The impact of our project in Sarteneja is impressive. The health of the animals has greatly improved, the number of unwanted litters has decreased and the attachment of the people to their pets is remarkable.
In January 2018, FVAI returned to a Mayan village. The welcome was extraordinary! We sterilized over 80 cats and dogs in 2 days with the help of the Corozal Animal Project or CAP. We will again be crossing the Bay of Corozal in order to offer free veterinary care to the underprivileged communities. What an amazing way to help animals and discover this unique culture.
We invite all veterinarians, animal health technicians, students and all travelers with and without experience to join our team.
Thank you for helping the animals of Belize by participating in a concrete effort to improve their overall health and welfare.
Belize, a little known country in Central America is a paradise for scuba diving and snorkeling with the second largest barrier reef in the world. Its luxurious forests are home to ocelots, jaguars, monkeys, tapirs, toucans and other animals. The official language of Belize is English, but the inhabitants also speak Spanish, Creole, Mayan and Garifuna.
The clinics are of the M.A.S.H. variety (Mobile Animal Surgical Hospital). This mobility allows us to help isolated villages that do not receive veterinary services on a regular basis. In order to facilitate access to the clinic, a central location or meeting place is required. A community center then becomes the village’s official veterinary clinic for a few hours.
